Hypertension, DASH & Mediterranean Diet’s & Osteoporosis: Why Nutrition Alone Is Not Enough

A recent review “Nutritional Strategies for Bone and Vascular Health in Hypertension and Osteoporosis” by Gowda et al. 2025, highlights something many clinicians overlook:

Hypertension (high blood pressure) and osteoporosis (low bone density) share common biological pathways.

  • Chronic inflammation
  • Oxidative stress
  • Calcium dysregulation
  • Hormonal shifts with ageing

When blood pressure rises, urinary calcium loss increases. Over time, that can contribute to reduced bone mineral density. At the same time, vascular stiffness and arterial calcification increase.

This is the bone–artery paradox:

  • Calcium leaves bone
  • Calcium accumulates in arteries

What the Study Reinforces

The paper supports strong evidence behind the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension):

✔ Reduced sodium (some evidence but nuanced as source matters)
✔ Higher potassium
✔ Adequate magnesium
✔ Dietary calcium (from food)
✔ Improved Vitamin D status

DASH lowers systolic blood pressure by 5–11 mmHg in many patients.

But importantly — these same nutrients also:

• Reduce urinary calcium loss
• Support bone mineralisation
• Improve endothelial function
• Reduce systemic inflammation

This confirms that a dietary strategy is powerful.

But here’s the missing piece.

Nutrition Provides the Materials – Bone Requires a Mechanical Signal.

Bone adapts to load. (Wolff’s Law)

But, unless mechanical strain exceeds a meaningful threshold, osteogenesis does not occur, and bones do not adapt.

Many exercise programs — walking, light resistance, swimming — simply do not generate sufficient force to stimulate new bone formation, particularly in older adults.

Research suggests osteogenic stimulation requires forces exceeding approximately 4× body weight. (Deere UK Study, 2012)

The OsteoStrong® Difference

OsteoStrong’s® proprietary Spectrum machines are designed to safely deliver high-force axial loading in a controlled environment.

At OsteoStrong®:

• Members generate measured substantial MOB safely (for example 5 to 15 multiples of body weight in legs)
• Sessions are brief (approximately 10–15 minutes)
• No high impact
• No repetitive strain
• No heavy gym lifts

OsteoStrong isn’t a typical workout. It’s a safe, measurable and highly targeted osteogenic loading system designed to build bone density, strengthen muscles and improve balance—so you dramatically reduce your risk of falls and fractures.

Why This Matters for Hypertensive Patients

The Gowda review makes it clear that lowering blood pressure improves vascular health and helps protect bone mineral balance.

But combining:

• DASH-style mineral optimisation
• Adequate protein intake
• Vitamin D sufficiency
• Sodium moderation

WITH

• Structured high-force osteogenic stimulus

A Synergistic benefit is achieved.

Then you can improve:

✔ Arterial compliance
✔ Muscle strength
✔ Bone density
✔ Fall prevention
✔ Fracture risk

No medication can replicate that combination.

The Integrated Model

Hypertension and osteoporosis are not isolated diseases.
They are expressions of systemic ageing biology.

At OsteoStrong®, we focus on:

  1. Nutrition (fuel, protein and mineral balance)
  2. Lifestyle (sleep, stress, inflammation)
  3. Medication awareness
  4. Exercise — specifically, safe osteogenic loading

Because lowering blood pressure is important.

But building bone strength is transformational.

If you’re managing hypertension, osteoporosis, or both, the question isn’t just How do I lower my blood pressure?

It should be:

“How do I direct calcium back where it belongs?”

Into bone.
Not arteries.

At OsteoStrong® we can help improve your health and longevity by keeping you active and independent for longer.
